Two deadlines coming up for Jane Austen events

A couple of deadlines coming up for local Jane Austen events:

Sunday, May 1: Send an email to our JASNA ORSWWA Regional coordinator, Margaret Christmann at [email protected], if you are interested in sitting with other regional members to attend the play, Emma, that will be put on at the Bag and Baggage Theater in Hillsboro. Member Pauline Beard will be doing a talk before the performances on Friday, May 20th and 27th. If you want to sit with other members of our group, send Margaret an e-mail by May 1st and note which day you want to attend. Margaret will then buy tickets together for the shows.

Friday, May 6: The registration deadline for our annual spring tea on May 14. Feel free to invite a friend to join us. Our speaker has an interesting topic in Lending Libraries, and you can find out more about the program and the speaker here on our 2016 Events page.

AGM Tribute Grant 2016 recipient announced

Dear Members,

The AGM Tribute Grant Committee would like to announce the selection of the 2016 grant recipient. Congratulations to Vonnie Alto, who will be attending the conference in Washington D.C. this October! We are sure she will find the upcoming JASNA conference to be an enriching experience.

We would also like to ask you to consider rooming wth Vonnie and splitting the cost of her room. Washington D.C. is an expensive city and we would like to be able to cover the cost of her trip. Please let Margaret know if you would like to share Vonnie's room. It is already reserved at the special rate (still super high) for four nights, October 20-24th.

Tribute Grant applications due April 15

There is just a week left to get your applications in for the 2016 AGM Tribute Grant, due April 15. Application forms are available online here at http://www.jasna-orswwa.org/tribute-grant-2016.html and must be filed electronically. It doesn't take long to apply. You must be a member of our region who has not attended an AGM before. This is a great opportunity to attend the 2016 AGM in Washington D.C., October 21-23.

2016 AGM Tribute Grant honorees

Our AGM Tribute Grant honorees were chosen at the March Reading Group meeting. They are Mary Margaret Benson and Frank McClanahan. Mary Margaret was the founder of our group and the RC from 1985-1992. Her husband, Frank, later took his turn as RC, and both were instrumental in the success of our 2010 Portland AGM. They continue to help our region thrive in various ways. We are grateful for all they have done!

Back issues of 'Persuasions' donated to region

At our September meeting, Pat Fulbright shared news that Mary Cammann, a longtime member of our regional chapter, donated back issues of Persuasions, JASNA's annual peer-reviewed journal, for members to enjoy. Some of the older issues look more like newsletters!

So that all members can enjoy the archives, members are encouraged to share and borrow issues at regional meetings and events. So be on the lookout at the next meeting to borrow (or bring back?) a past copy of Persuasions -- and enjoy a trip down Jane Austen memory lane!

Member's senior thesis essay about marriage and Jane Austen's Emma

The following essay is the short version of member Elizabeth Moscoso's senior thesis essay, "I Do: Marriage for All the Right Reasons," which she wrote about marriage and Austen's novel Emma. Elizabeth submitted it for the JASNA Essay Contest this year; although it was not selected as one of the winners, we are happy that she would like to share her essay with Austen scholars and lovers!

2015 AGM Tribute Grant Application is now online!

The new 2015 AGM Tribute Grant application is now posted online at our website on our Tribute Grant 2015 page at http://www.jasna-orswwa.org/tribute-grant-2015.html. This year we honor beloved past members Kathleen McCann and Virginia Urrutia.

If you meet the criteria, please apply! If not, let your friends and relatives know about it. We would like to increase the number of applicants this year.

The application process closes on April 15th this year, and the winner will be announced by May 15, 2015.

Ode to Jane Austen

Teacups with fine handles, round saucers, mix matched
stacked by the Earl Grey and square cubes of white crystal sugar,
tinkling as they touch.
At ivory tablecloth covered tables, ladies in dresses delicately
wipe biscuit crumbs from lips, napkins on laps, set gently.
Copies of Persuasion and Sense & Sensibility
our companions, pages worn at the edges.
Travelers, we are by your words written
on quiet mornings, fog hugging dew adorned fields
of grass and possibility, the fire crackling behind
you as you gaze towards day, towards the sun
slowly grazing the tops of the sleeping trees.
Listen to the whispers in your mind,
write, write, write,
give heroines their voices, your quill poised
in your hand, inked letters drying into permanence.

Voting opportunity for members -- 1 or 2 special events next year?

Our Regional Coordinator, Kim Higgins, is asking for our vote! One more day to vote (ending on July 31) on whether to have one or two events next year. Only members are able to vote, via email to
[email protected]

Traditionally, we have held a spring event with speaker and a December event, where we toast Jane Austen's birthday (also with a speaker)
There has been discussion centering around the possibility of skipping the December event this year, and of hosting just one event in 2015, either in the late winter or spring.
December is a busy month for members, and we can toast Jane's birthday at the November meeting. Event space would be easier to get in the non-wedding seasons (which seem to be May and June).
