"Val McDermid’s 'Northanger Abbey' is the second book to emerge from the Austen Project, in which Jane Austen’s published oeuvre is reimagined by 21st-century authors... It may be an adaptation of someone else’s novel, which itself is woven with references to other, earlier books, but nothing feels forced, nothing feels untrue. McDermid makes it very much her own, although any skeletons in the cupboards remain strictly metaphorical. |
The second book in the "Austen Project" series has been released, Val McDermid's modern take on Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey. The new release garnered a positive review in the New York Times Book Review, as quoted below: The first book in the "Austen Project" was a modern adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, by Joanna Trollope. This link comes from member Debbie Guyol and is really interesting! The title of the article is called "Jane Austen's Collection of Critical Feedback From Her (Sometimes Harsh) Friends and Family" and is online here at http://alturl.com/ycvje. This is a transcript of JA's personal compilation of various readers' opinions of Mansfield Park. The manuscript of the same for Emma is also linked in the article, but not transcribed. Fascinating! Our Regional Coordinator, Kim Higgins, recently received the following news and wanted to make it known to our members. Please note that it is not a JASNA-sanctioned tour, but it does have local connections (the shop is in Newport), so we are passing this information on as it might be of interest to our regional members.
Bridie's Irish Faire, an Irish shop in Newport, Oregon, is organizing a "women only" tour this year to England entitled "Writers & Royals" (Jane Austen, William Shakespeare, and Tudor England - the London leg of the trip). The trip dates are September 25 - October 8, 2014. There are currently 12 women traveling in September, and there are 8 slots still available. The deadline to register is July 31. You can read more about the tour itinerary and registration information online here at http://www.bridiesirishfaire.com/mysitecaddy/site3/writers_royals-england2014.htm. Here is information about an upcoming seminar in Portland about Jane Austen, a seminar led by our own Pauline Beard! Please contact the program directly if interested. Please note that this is not a JASNA-sponsored event. Delve is a conversation-based Readers Seminars series, a program of Literary Arts, wherein participants discuss challenging works of literature with a local scholar. You can find out more about the Delve Readers Seminars here at http://www.literary-arts.org/what-we-do/delve-home/ . One of the upcoming seminars in early 2015 includes the major novels of Jane Austen. The full seminar description is online here at http://www.literary-arts.org/event/novels-jane-austen-delve-seminar/ , and the seminar guide and local scholar is Pauline Beard. The recipient of our first annual AGM Tribute Grant, honoring Janet Rohrbaugh and Anna Quillan, has been awarded to Elizabeth Moscoso! Elizabeth is a student at Marylhurst University majoring in English Literature, with a focus on creative writing. She has been a member of our region since 2012. Elizabeth credits Jane Austen as her inspiration to become a writer. Through her writing, she hopes to showcase the human condition the way that Austen did during her lifetime. She is excited to learn more about Mansfield Park and the controversies in the novel. While attending the AGM, she hopes that she will be able to gain insight as to Jane’s ability to write to that topic. The Grant committee is excited to be able to offer Elizabeth the chance to attend the AGM in Montreal this year, and we know that Janet and Anna, so dearly missed, would be as well. Congratulations, Elizabeth! Perfect timing, too, as AGM registration opened up last week! Go to the JASNA AGM registration page link to view the online registration form. The registration page states that registration is at full capacity, but the wait list is open.
