Voting opportunity for members -- 1 or 2 special events next year?

Our Regional Coordinator, Kim Higgins, is asking for our vote! One more day to vote (ending on July 31) on whether to have one or two events next year. Only members are able to vote, via email to
[email protected]

Traditionally, we have held a spring event with speaker and a December event, where we toast Jane Austen's birthday (also with a speaker)
There has been discussion centering around the possibility of skipping the December event this year, and of hosting just one event in 2015, either in the late winter or spring.
December is a busy month for members, and we can toast Jane's birthday at the November meeting. Event space would be easier to get in the non-wedding seasons (which seem to be May and June).

New title -- 'The Hidden Jane Austen'

A new title of close readings of Jane Austen's novels was published last month, The Hidden Jane Austen by John Wiltshire. It promises to be an interesting read, if any of our members are interested in delving into deeper psychological explorations of Austen's characters.

Through a series of compelling close readings of key passages in each novel, Wiltshire underscores Austen's unique ability to penetrate the hidden inner motives and impulses of her characters, and reveals some of the secrets of her narrative art.

There are also some special reader features on the Cambridge University Press website, including a book trailer and a free preview of the introduction and first chapter!

RSVP for June 13th reading group discussion

You are all invited to attend our next Reading group meeting at 1:00 pm on Sunday, July 13. We will meet at the home of our treasurer, Marva Wiebe, in Hillsboro.

Our discussion topic has changed, and this month we will discuss "The Business of Matchmaking," with discussion leaders Elaine Blatt and Stephanie Fleming. We will discuss the novel, The Three Weissmanns of Westport in November, led by Debbie Guyol.

Seattle Gala pics and write-up

The Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA) Puget Sound Region held a Gala event on Sunday, June 22, 2014, at the Women's University Club of Seattle. Below are photos, as well as a write-up, from one of regional members, Elizabeth Moscoso, who attended the Gala event.

I had the chance to drive up to Seattle over the weekend to attend their gala on Sunday, June 22 (previous post here). It was a lovely sunny day in Seattle, and the venue was absolutely picturesque and wonderful. Plenty of gentlemen and ladies donned their best Regency outfits for the day and were very much admired. The lunch was three courses and tasty. Each table had a “Mary Bennett” to be the judge of a crossword puzzle/ trivia game that was played. The lucky winner got a set of Jane Austen note cards! The speaker was Iris Lutz, and we gave us a little “tour” of house, cottages, manors and estates in England that Jane knew, lived in and was inspired by for her novels. We all agreed: we should do this again soon. I have attached some pictures for your enjoyment!
