Back issues of 'Persuasions' donated to region

9/18/2015

At our September meeting, Pat Fulbright shared news that Mary Cammann, a longtime member of our regional chapter, donated back issues of Persuasions, JASNA's annual peer-reviewed journal, for members to enjoy. Some of the older issues look more like newsletters!

So that all members can enjoy the archives, members are encouraged to share and borrow issues at regional meetings and events. So be on the lookout at the next meeting to borrow (or bring back?) a past copy of Persuasions -- and enjoy a trip down Jane Austen memory lane!

From the JASNA Persuasion archives...

From the JASNA Persuasion archives, highlighted recently in last month's JASNA Update... an article from our very own Mary Margaret Benson! Her article, "Excellently Qualified to Shine at a Round Game", originally published in Persuasions, No. 8, 1986, "demonstrates how the ever-inventive Jane Austen transformed domestic card tables and casual card games into veritable microcosms of the domestic society portrayed in each of her novels."

An excerpt of the article below:
Excerpt from the article
The full article is available to read and enjoy online at http://www.jasna.org/persuasions/printed/number8/benson.pdf, through the Persuasions archives on the JASNA website.

Seattle Gala pics and write-up

The Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA) Puget Sound Region held a Gala event on Sunday, June 22, 2014, at the Women's University Club of Seattle. Below are photos, as well as a write-up, from one of regional members, Elizabeth Moscoso, who attended the Gala event.
I had the chance to drive up to Seattle over the weekend to attend their gala on Sunday, June 22 (previous post here). It was a lovely sunny day in Seattle, and the venue was absolutely picturesque and wonderful. Plenty of gentlemen and ladies donned their best Regency outfits for the day and were very much admired. The lunch was three courses and tasty. Each table had a “Mary Bennett” to be the judge of a crossword puzzle/ trivia game that was played. The lucky winner got a set of Jane Austen note cards! The speaker was Iris Lutz, and we gave us a little “tour” of house, cottages, manors and estates in England that Jane knew, lived in and was inspired by for her novels. We all agreed: we should do this again soon. I have attached some pictures for your enjoyment!

Jane Austen Day 2014: The Unfinished Jane Austen

2/18/2014

The Unfinished Jane Austen
From the Eastern Pennsylvania Region of JASNA, Jane Austen Day 2014 events will take place April 26, 2014. This year's day-long event entitled The Unfinished Jane Austen will be a fascinating exploration of Austen's two unfinished novels, The Watsons and Sanditon, and a provocative discussion of what Austen might have accomplished if she had lived a longer life. There will be a panel of Austen scholars joining the region for Jane Austen Day. Presentations by Professors Jocelyn Harris, Janine Barchas and Michael Gamer will be the highlights of the event.

Jane Austen Day will be held in the exquisite Grant Room at Philadelphia’s historic Union League and include complimentary morning tea and coffee, a delicious luncheon, selected merchants including a bookseller, and an abundance of good discussion and fellowship. More details, including the schedule of events and registration form, are available on the Eastern Pennsylvania Region's website at http://jasnaeastpa.org/jaday.html.

The JASNA renewal letters have been recently sent out, and there is an option to include a donation to the Chawton House Museum. All donations received from August 1 through December 16 will go toward the campaign to raise funds needed to purchase a gold and turquoise ring that once belonged to Jane Austen.

You can read more about that campaign here online at http://www.jane-austens-house-museum.org.uk/

And if you have already renewed your JASNA membership, you can make a separate donation through the JASNA website here at http://www.jasna.org/membership/contribution.html
