The Annual General Meeting was held oh so successfully in October of 2010. We are now hoping to regroup and update.
 Robin and Nelson have moved to Corvallis. They have been very happy for the last two years, and came to the Christmas event with bags of tea! Two of our very own members, who met at one of our reading groups, are getting married! Robin Darby and Nelson Bridwell announced their engagement at the reading group in January and we celebrated with cake and champagne and much laughter and mentions of romance. We do wish them well and will think of them on their Wedding Day, July 20th. 2008. How Jane would have loved this piece of news!

 So we are about to update! celebration brightened up a rainy Sunday afternoon for the Oregon/SW Washington Region members. The Heritage Room on Marylhurst University campus was beautifully decorated with teapots and holiday greens, thanks to Frank McClanahan and Mary Margaret Benson. New supporting guests from Lebanon Oregon wore superb Regency costumes. The Portland Rose Garland Dancers lifted our spirits with their graceful and intricate weaving of garlands for English Country dances. The black and white photo does not do justice to the beautiful rose and green colours of the dancers. After a sumptuous lunch with wine and tea and a birthday toast to Jane, Paula Stepankowsky, President of the Fanny Burney Society entertained us with a lively overview of the author’s life and Jane’s legacy from her. One Janeite said afterwards “ I could have listened to Paula for hours!” Paula also generously allowed us to see some of her First Editions of Burney’s works. We look forward to seeing more editions at the AGM in 2010 in Portland where we plan to have Paula’s collection on display. Many thanks to Frank for organizing such a pleasant afternoon…how Jane would have loved it!

A large party secures its own amusement." —Jane Austen As many of you know, the AGM in 2010 will be held in Portland Oregon and much work has been carried out to get the ball (not just the Regency Ball!) rolling. The novel to be explored is Northanger Abbey, and the theme, Jane Austen and the Abbey: Mystery, Mayhem and Muslin, promises to provide fun and illumination, not just on the novel but also fabrics.... More details will be posted after the Chicago AGM in early October when Frank McClanahan and Pauline Beard will be presenting the ideas to the Board. Susan Schwartz our fearless AGM leader will be in Tuscany...but I am sure will have some fun there too...!  The next Reading Group Meeting is a light-hearted discussion of Masterpiece Theatre’s 2008 Program of Jane Austen’s Films on SUNDAY 14th.September from 1-3pm at Pauline Beard’s house: 15132 NW Aberdeen Drive, Portland Oregon 97229. Melissa Schumacher, whose degree was in film and literature, will lead the discussion on adaptation of novels to film. She and Pauline have selfishly chosen two wonderful clips of film to critique…the infamous Chariots of Fire running piece from Persuasion (see UTube if you missed this) and the purely romantic “The Look” between Darcy and Elizabeth from Pride and Prejudice, the BBC version. We would then like you to choose a clip from one of the Masterpiece films for its appeal, its dedication to the text, or for its nonsense and travesty! Either cue the clip and bring with you if you have the recordings, or simply tell Melissa (who has all the films) which film, which section, and with her expertise in video she will locate it on the disc or video. Come with some critique in mind to open the discussion to everyone. The Beards bought a new large flat screen TV specially for the occasion. Looking forward to seeing you!  Plans are underway for the Jane Austen Society of North America's AGM to be held in Portland in 2010: Oct.28-31st. October. Fittingly at Halloween the novel under discussion is Austen's spoof on the Gothic novel, Northanger Abbey, and the theme: "Jane Austen and The Abbey: Mystery, Mayhem and Muslin!" The Hilton in Portland is booked as our venue. The time will fly by and in that time we need support financially and "people-wise"! If you know of organizations willing to support non-profit groups such as ours, or have contacts with funding groups, or would simply like to make a contribution, please contact the Treasurer or Co-coordinators as listed. Volunteers for all aspects of the conference are needed. Put your particular skills to work: meeting and greeting; organizing; fundraising; decorating etc etc. Again, contact the coordinators as listed or [email protected].
